PLAYER PROFILE
Cheryl Bromley

Cheryl began playing Golf Croquet in 2007. She is a USCA Class I National Golf Croquet Referee & Instructor and has been the Chair of the USCA National Golf Croquet Committee since March 2014. She is the current District President for Wisconsin and a member of the Milwaukee Croquet Club.

She was awarded the 2020 USCA President’s Award for her contributions to croquet and in 2021, she, along with three colleagues, formed the Women’s Golf Croquet Academy which travels to clubs throughout the U.S. to run clinics and events to empower women players to participate and compete.

Cheryl has competed in five GC World Championships previously - three Women’s GC Worlds and two Open GC Worlds in New Zealand, Australia, Egypt, and England, along with other international events in Canada and the UK.

Beverley Cardo

Bev started playing American Rules 6W Croquet in 2016.  After years of playing tennis and golf, croquet became her sport of choice and she went on to learn Association Rules and Golf Croquet.  

 

In 2019, Bev traveled to Ireland with a group of players captained by Danny Huneycutt, to play In the Irish Open AC tournament where she was the finalist of the Green Cup, followed by a women’s competition between US and Ireland.  She and her teammates returned home with alove and appreciation of the culture and hospitality they received from their new Irish friends.

In 2023, Bev won the Women’s GC U.S. Open tournament, which encouraged her to compete in this year’s Women’s GC World Championship.  She was honored to be selected as second alternate for the United States and chose to enter the Qualifier to earn a place in the championship tournament.  She is looking forward to meeting and competing with the best GC women players in the world.

Bev is actively involved in a couple of croquet clubs that she belongs to at home and serves as Secretary of the USCA.   

Helen Covington

Native of Jacksonville, Florida. Graduated from Florida State University. Studied at FSU in Florence Italy. Peace Corps Volunteer in Sidi Ali Ben Nassar’Allah, Tunisia. International MBA from Thunderbird Graduate School, Glendale, AZ and Guadalajara, Mexico. Worked in Investor Relations at an Oil and Gas Exploration company in New York City and returned to Jacksonville in 1991. Taught in local public schools, retiring from Mandarin High School as a social studies teacher, (World History, AP World and AICE Global Perspectives)

Helen started playing croquet at the age of 60 when the Florida Yacht Club built a court in 2015. She played locally in the NE Florida league with FYC, Ponte Vedra Croquet Club, The Plantation, Jekyll Island, Grand Haven and Hammock Dunes. John Curington, a hall of fame member of the United States Croquet Association who owns Ponte Vedra Croquet Club, came and taught us how to play the game.

In 2019 a friend convinced her that she would do well in tournament play. She had seen a tournament at the Sonoma-Cutrer Winery in July and since her sister lives near Sonoma she thought she would give it a try. There were only 16 people playing doubles for the first few days and she was assigned to play with a lovely man, Andrew Heaton, former head of the International Red Cross. They came in second. The first place team included Ben Rothman, who two weeks later won the Golf Croquet World Championships.

Her career highlights include:

  • Won First Flight Singles at 2019 Western Regional Golf Croquet at Sonoma-Cutrer Winery, came in 2nd in Doubles;
  • Placed Second in both First Flight Doubles and Singles at US Golf Croquet Nationals in 2019;
  • Champion NFLCC Spring 2020 Ponte Vedra Invitational Golf Croquet;
  • Runner-up NEFLCC Spring Golf Croquet Open 2021;
  • Champion NFLCC Fall Cup Golf Croquet 2021;
  • Winner Championship Singles at the Women’s Golf Croquet Open 2021;
  • 2021 Female Golf Croquet Grand Prix Winner of the Year
  • Runner-Up Florida Regionals Golf Championship doubles 2022
  • Runner up Women’s Friendship Cup October 2022
  • 2022 USCA Female Player of the Year
  • Named to USA team for Women’s World Golf Croquet Tournament 2023.
